LAME is an open-source MP3 encoder available for download in source code form. It is compatible with several operating systems and includes binaries and GUI-based programs. LAME was developed in mid-1998 and is maintained with SVN and hosted on SourceForge. It is considered the best MP3 encoder at mid-high bitrates and VBR. Mark Taylor led the project to its current form and improvements in quality and speed are ongoing. The website provides quick links to obtain the latest source code, contact developers, learn about software using LAME, and access project history/changelog.
